Frequently Asked Questions
Will you read my manuscript?
It doesn’t get you anything to have another writer read your manuscript. You should be putting your energy into submitting your manuscript to an editor who will buy it, at a publishing company that will pay you an advance for it. Read the resources that will help you do it.
I finished my first book, a Star Trek novel. Will you help me get it published?
It’s been almost twenty-five years since I wrote a Star Trek novel. Check the Pocket Books website for their guidelines and follow them.
Send me a FREE glossy 8x10 photograph. Be sure to SIGN IT YOURSELF. I HAVE TOO FEW MANNERS TO FOLLOW YOUR INSTRUCTIONS AND I AM TOO CHEAP TO PAY THE POSTAGE SO I EXPECT YOU TO PAY IT. BESIDES, I’VE NEVER READ A WORD YOU’VE WRITTEN AND NEVER WILL AND HAVE NO IDEA WHO YOU ARE AND DON’T CARE BUT YOU’VE BEEN PUBLISHED SO YOU’RE OBVIOUSLY A RICH AND FAMOUS WRITER SO YOU SHOULD BE GLAD TO DO THIS FOR ME.
If you really want a copy of my publicity photo, you can make arrangements with the photographer, Gary Benson, to buy one. Send it to me with return postage. Then I’ll be happy to autograph and return it. In all the years this information has been here, only one person has ever done this.
I hear you have signed bookplates. I work with special needs elderly scrapbooking MENSA members and —
Hang on. Stop
Huh? Really, they would be so thrilled —
Stop. It isn’t necessary to make up silly stories. All you need to do to get an autographed bookplate is to send me a self-addressed stamped envelope. If you don’t want it inscribed (signed to you), be sure to tell me. I don’t mind if you are getting it to increase the value of a used book you’re planning to sell. (Though of course I wish you would buy a new copy from me; and, you do know that many book collectors despise bookplates, don’t you?)
I don’t even mind, particularly, if you waste your time trying to sell the autograph on eBay, but you ought to know that anyone who’s Internet-savvy enough to buy stuff on eBay is also Internet-savvy enough to find out that they can get my autograph for the price of a stamped envelope. My address is on the Basement Full of Books page.
If you are a book dealer and would like bookplates for your stock, please email me at email@example.com.
